Petition Concerning the objectionable statements by California Congresswoman Jane Harman regarding the balkanization of Iran

To: various political bodies as well as Congresswoman Harman's office, in addition to the media and Israeli and American embassies

Concerning the objectionable statements by California Congresswoman Jane Harman regarding the balkanization of Iran.

The Iranian community within and without Iran, through this petition, are expressing our deepest objections regarding the irresponsible statements of Democratic Representative Jane Harman in regard to her statements regarding division of the territorial integrity of Iran.

Ms. Harman on the 3rd of May 2009 during the annual conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) at the Washington Convention Center expressed views regarding combating the Iranian challenge that included the territorial separation of the sovereign state of Iran, in addition to indicating the use of force against Iran.

As a community and as a people we find any talk of dividing the ethnicities of our eternally united nation as unacceptable and grotesquely irresponsible.

These outrageous statements that were met with thundering applause in the midst of high level American and Israeli diplomats were and are considered to be profoundly offensive and humiliating to the sensibilities of Iranians all across the world.

We are deeply disappointed at the response to these statements, and many of us who vehemently oppose the tyrannical system of the Islamic Republic were turned off and uniformly outraged by the sentiments expressed. These suggestions about dividing up and creating Iranian on Iranian tension will be met with the utmost opposition of our community.

There are certainly profound disagreements among Iranians of all stripes against the ruling regime in Iran, but this outrageous display of ignorance about the Iranian nation and it's deep historical roots will only serve to stifle reform and rally people in the middle to support an otherwise deeply unpopular regime.

We are stunned and outraged that a US Congresswoman with such scant and distorted views about our region would have the audacity to so cavalierly speak on matters whose ramifications if put in practice could embroil the Middle East in a long and protracted conflict that will eventually drain America of it's resources and potentially spell enormous damage for America's long term interests.

Considering the profound offense that our community has taken to the words of Congresswoman Harman particularly at such a prestigious forum of ideas, we sincerely hope that she reconsider her statements and grant us a full formal apology so that these misunderstandings don't occur in the future. We will shortly be sending our petitions to various political bodies as well as Congresswoman Harman's office, in addition to the media and Israeli and American embassies.

On behalf of Iranians abroad and within Iran

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
