Mahasti

On June 25th, 2007 Mahasti, was an Iranian pop diva, departed from us, and on June 28th, 2007 Mahasti rested in peace in Westwood, US.

One more time Rangarang TV station which is managed by an obscure character with name of Davood VEISI that he caused controversy for departure of Mahasti. VEISI aired images of Mahasti’s baptism for 72 hours none stop.

Apparently, VEISI was receiving phone calls from public and were trying to defame Mahasti as follow:

A woman called and said: “no one was crying except a young man with name of Mehron, and he was Mahasti’s boy friend”.

A woman called and stated that no one was crying.

A man called and said; “Mahasti did baptized but afterward she went to a Mullah and repented for her act of converting to faith of Christianity.”

A woman called and stated; that she was not please that Mahastis’ daughter Sahar for paying visit to friends and not staying home during mourning time.

Several people came and accused a foundation which has connection to the IRI, and Mahasti was disrespected by her daughter.

Facts:

1. Mahasti’s coffin had lion and sun flag.
2. Mr. Hassan Shamezadeh blasted the IRI for Human Rights Abuse in Iran.
3. Ms. Parvin Saddigy praised King of Kings Reza PAHLAVI for removing head scarf from women’s mentality and emancipating women from patriarchy society.
4. Countless people blasted the IRI for ruling Iran with Iron Fist.

All in all, in case Sahar decided to use the foundation, and apparently the foundation paid for cost of Mahasti's burial which has a connection with IRI, she is a smart lady, she used the foundation fund which is coming from the IRI, and used the money against the IRI, and educated everyone how the IRI was ruthless, and with regard to Davood, no one should expect more from Davood because when he speaks Persian, he uses "ignorant accent" in front of camera. You do the math. Way to go Sahar, you outsmart the IRI, and good for you.

Discovery of Parthian Fortress behind Gelabar Dam

Archeological excavations behind Gelabar Dam, in Iranian Zanjan Province, revealed that the existing fortress which was supposed to date back to Islamic period belongs to Parthian dynastic era.

Tehran, 9 June 2007 (CHN Foreign Desk)—Archeological excavations behind Gelabar Dam in Zanjan province, northwest of Tehran, brought into light that contrary to previous belief the fortress located behind the dam dates back to Parthian dynastic era (248 BC- 224 AD). This is while prior to this it was believed that the fortress belongs to Islamic period (651 AD afterwards).

Abolfazl Aali, head of archeology team behind Gelabar Dam told CHN: “Prior to this, based on earthenware vessels which were gathered from the surface layer of the fortress, it looked as if the fortress dates back to the Islamic period. However, further excavations and discovery of Parthian earthenware dishes and evidence of architectural remains belonging to this period, revealed that this fortress must have been constructed during Parthian dynastic era.”

By inundation of Gelabar Dam, the Parthian fortress located behind the dam, only a small part of the fortress will remain like an island amidst the reservoir of the dam.

“At the same time, another two sites, one belongs to Copper and Stone Ages and the other to Parthian era and Iron Age are also under archeological excavations,” added Aali.

Head of excavation team behind Gelabar Dam further explained that the site which belongs to Copper and Stone Ages is a mono periodic residential settlement which will be submerged completely by inundation of Gelabar Dam. “A similar fate is in store for the Parthian and Iron Age discovered residential settlements as well,” added Aali.

Archeological excavations will continue until next month behind Gelabar Dam, which its inundation has already started.

Tehran, 23 June 2007 (CHN Foreign Desk)— Following the discovery of burial rites belong to 3000 to 6000 years ago in a cemetery behind Gelabar Dam, in Zanjan province, north west of Iran, archeological excavations in this site came into new stage. In all the 4 graves which have been discovered in this site earthen vessels in red or grey which are typical of this age have been found intact.

“Following the archeological excavations in this prehistoric site, and after removing architectural layers, 4 burials belonging to 6000-year ago were discovered. It is believed that probably all skeleton found in these graves belong to children,” told CHN, Abulfazl Ali, head of archeological team working behind Gelabar Dam.

According to him based on traditions of people living in prehistoric period these burials have been done without putting any gifts in the graves and children were buried in the floor of the houses.”

A cemetery belongs to Iron Age I (1550-1250BC) have also been discovered, announcing this news, Ali told CHN: “More than 4 graves have been discovered in this cemetery which in all of them earthen vessels in red or grey have been found intact.”

http://ettelaat.net/07-maj/news.asp?id=21411

bardia.forohar@gmail.com

If U.S. retreats, Iran emboldened: Extent of our Iraq folly obvious

By Patrick J. BuchananMonday, July 2, 2007 - Updated: 04:47 AM ESTWhat was anticipated in September, the retreat of the old bulls of the Republican Party from the Bush war policy, happened in June. The beginning of the end of U.S. involvement in Iraq is at hand. “I rise today,” said Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana last Monday, “to offer observations on the continuing involvement of the United States in Iraq. . . . Our course in Iraq has lost contact with our vital interests in the Middle East and beyond.” According to the six-term, ex-chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, three factors make it improbable the “surge” can succeed - and imperative the United States redeploy its troops, out of combat and perhaps out of Iraq: political fragmentation in Iraq, the growing strain on the U.S. military and the crumbling support at home. Lugar’s stance provides cover for Republicans anxious to break and join the chorus for early withdrawal. Beyond Sen. John McCain, a few generals and some neocon commentators, no one is calling for more U.S. troops. The handwriting is on the wall. “A course change should happen now,” said Lugar. But if his diagnosis seems on target, his remedy lacks credulity.
The United States has four strategic goals in Iraq, says Lugar. Prevent creation of a safe haven for terrorists. Prevent sectarian war from spilling out into the broader Middle East. Prevent Iran’s domination of the region. Limit the loss of U.S. credibility through the region and the world as a result of a failed mission in Iraq. Lugar’s recommended policy to secure these goals: downsizing and redeployment of U.S. military forces to more sustainable positions in Iraq and the Middle East. Lugar is calling for what the Iraq Study Group recommended, a shift of U.S. combat brigades out of action and out of country, turning their duties over to the Iraqis. But what is hard to see is the connection between the goals Lugar declares are vital, and the policy course he proposes for securing them.
Those 150,000 U.S. troops are the most effective, if not the only reliable, units preventing all-out sectarian civil war and defending the government, the contractors, the aid workers and the Green Zone. If we draw them down, how secure will the Americans left behind, and the friends of America, be in Iraq? What is to prevent the enemy from launching Tet-style offensives in U.S.-abandoned sectors? It is really a time for truth. After four years, 3,500 dead, 25,000 wounded and half a trillion dollars spent, Lugar’s four goals have not only not been attained, they are receding. Removing U.S. troops may only advance the day that all are lost.
If the U.S. forces, the most effective in Iraq, have failed to eradicate al-Qaeda in Anbar, how does he suppose the Shia-dominated government and Iraqi army will succeed? With the sectarian civil war near its height when a U.S. surge is under way, how will ending the surge and pulling out those troops cool, rather than unleash, the passions for killing?
As for Iran’s domination of the Gulf, fear of that was a major argument made against going to war. If you smash the only Arab nation in the Gulf able to stand up to Persian Iran, overthrow its Sunni regime and introduce majority, i.e., Shia rule, how can Iran not be the beneficiary?
This war was not only mismanaged, it was an historic blunder to begin with. Any U.S. war to overthrow Iran’s enemies - the Taliban in Kabul, Saddam and his Sunni Baathists in Baghdad - cannot but result in making Iran more dominant in the Gulf when the Americans depart. By eliminating the counterweight to Iranian domination, we guaranteed that either we become that counterweight, or there is none. As for preventing a loss of U.S. credibility in the region and the world, it is a little late for that. Bin Laden said Americans are weaker than Russians. They will not take the casualties. Was he wrong?
In his assessment of the Iraqi government, the cracking U.S. Army and the dwindling American will to sustain this war, Lugar is right. But no diplomacy is going to save for this country what the best army in the world fighting four years could not hold.
When we pull out U.S. forces, the odds will rise steadily that this war ends as did the one in Southeast Asia - with our friends slaughtered and our enemies triumphant. We may all hope not, but hope is a virtue, not a policy.

Pan-Turan

Dear Armenian Friends,

Everything reported here is true. First, I have been engaged in a long fight against pan-Turkism and have also fought against pan-Turk attempts to deny the Armenian genocide. I posted (for free) a book against pan-Turkism/pan-Turanis on-line a few years ago:

Pan-Turanism Takes Aim at Azerbaijan: A Geopolitical Agenda.
http://www.rozanehmagazine.com/NoveDec05/aazariINDEX.HTML

Part 1 details the history of pan-Turanism

Part 6 displays the geopolitical forces that support pan-Turkism. Make no mistake: pan-Turk views are now being presented in western academia as "history" - you will find the references in that this section.

Part 2: Pan-Turanian Claims to Azerbaijan - read item (3) Turks have been in the Caucasus for over 5000 Years [(a) Armenia, Georgia, Albania/Arran] - you will also see in Part 2, that "Azarbaijan" ONLY applies to Iran's northwest - pan-Turks stole the Iranian name to apply this to Albania/Arran as to lay claims to Iranian territory - which they now do. Please note that Iranian Azarbaijanis are different from the Republic that bears the same name.

Part 4: The Promotion of Discord - this chapter has many references to the Armenian tragedy.
As you well know, there are now western "academics" who question the veracity of the genocide of Armenians and Pontic Greeks - these views are being supported by handsome funds from political sources. For the noble Armenians of this forum, you will find these sections of particular interest:

This on-line book posting has caused considerable irritation to pan-Turks - at least judging by the constant flurry of hate messages I have been receiving each month by e-mail for 2 years now.

I also know Adil Baguirov very well. A few months back he first attempted to discredit my credentials as a professor - he was crushed by a devastating retort from the academy of Sciences in the Republic of Georgia - they put him in his place.

Baguirov then used very vulgar language and threatened me with physical violence - he boasted as to how he would attack me with his martial arts skills - incredibly he was foolish enough to send this by e-mail. This means that (according to Canadian law) he is in deep trouble - the Royal Canadian Mounted Police consider his offensive language as tantamount to threats. I assure you that Baguirov is a pan-Turk fanatic hooligan who wishes to present himself and his movement as a "cultural" movement (like Amin Rasulzadeh - the same fellow who applied the term "Azerbaijan" to Albania to please his Ottoman masters in Istanbul just after World War One). I assure you that "pan-Turkism" is anything but "cultural" it is a chauvinistic ideology.

Unfortunately I have seen pan-Turkist ideology represented at the very top "academic" circles in the "Republic of Azarbaijan" - Ali Noruzov, the head of the Political Science Department at Baku University has issued a number of e-mails attempting to discredit me - this has again backfired (Noruzov has not even published a single accredited textbook in the west), but again pan-Turks do not seem to understand when they have been embarrassed and corrected.

Armenians, Iranians, Greeks, Georgians and Slavs now face a common threat: the ideology of pan-Turanism. We can combat their lies if we stand together. Armenians are not alone in the fight against pan-Turanism.

One thing our neighbors are unaware of is that their most ardent pan-Turkists are the most accomplished destroyers of the cultural history of the entirety of Azerbaijan.
Adil Baguirov, Armenian hater extraordinaire, is from a long line of fanatics and killers.
Our old nemesis Baguirov, perhaps the most outspoken of the pan-Turkists from Baku http://www.bagirov. com/index. html has now taken out most of his fanatical content and is pretending to be a “political scientist.”

However, here in this article http://en.mirzexeze rinsesi.net/ articles/ category/ history he is typically spinning the tale of how the modern manifestation of pan-Turkism is “not really pan-Turkism”, but, as he claims, is this sort of “common interest group with common linguistic ties.”
In other words, Pan-Turkism is now changing its image with a new form of public relations sophistry.

The fact that the still believes the Manchu and all of the Tungus are “Turkic” still means that pan-Turkism is alive and well. The constant laboring of inducting Turkic speakers into their imperialist ambitions is evident when one merely reads their forums. Most there are much less refined in their approach to this fanaticism. Baguirov, after all, comes from a long line of spinsters

Nasser Pourpirar

He is a favorite of pan-Turks (and their supporters in the west) and his new website has been introduced by Ali-Reza Farshi, a pan-Turk fanatic who resides in Iran.

Naria
http://na.naria.info/

The term "Naria" refers to Pourpirar's pen-name.

Recall that Pourpirar believes that the entire history of Iran (esp. ancient Iran) is a fabrication by Jews and Americans. he is also an extreme anti-Semite and a fervent supporter of pan-Arabism, including the late Saddam Hussein. See his views in this link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasser_Pourpirar

Note Farshi's message (in Persian) below:

Blogfa.

===============================================================================.

The message indicates that this website (like close to a hundred others) has been designed and hosted in Iran. Note that the chairman of the site is a certain turanians@gmail.com - I suspect that the "chairman" is none other than Mr. Farshi himself.

It is shocking to see the views of a fanatic ideologue being so actively promoted both in the west and in Iran. Pourpirar does not understand the academic disciplines of archaeology, anthropology, historiography, or linguistics. His level of technical knowledge of those disciplines is not even at the first-year college level.

This explains his ignorance as to the existence of references and sources to pre-Islamic Iran as far away as Vietnam, Polynesia, Thailand, China, India and Japan. The same is true in Islamic references (e.g,. Tabari) as well as Greco-Roman references. Pourpirar claims that the latter (Greco-Roman) are ALL Zionist-US fabrications) - yet he fails to explain the existence of a plethora of other sources, again because he does not know them and he is not a trained academic. Also Pourpirar DOES NOT read Latin or Greek - he also has no clue regarding Byzantine, Armenian or Albanian references . This anti-Semite pan-Arabist is now the darling of pan-Turan fanatics and esp. their supporters in the west.

Brenda Shaffer (herself of Israeli descent) cites Pourpirar, but as she does not read Persian, she is unaware of how anti-Jewish Pourpirar is. Shaffer has proven again that she is an ideologue - she cites primary sources without consulting them first. This raises serious questions about her academic credibility.

However, one observation must be repeated. Many Iranians fail to distinguish between personal opinions/political views/ideology versus the disciplines of archaeology, anthropology, historiography, and linguistics. These are centuries-long academic disciplines (like physics, chemistry and mathematics) that require years of training and research. This would be similar to a psychologist expressing views about engineering techniques.

Jihad in Glasgow

July 2, 2007
This was not how Gordon Brown hoped to begin his term as Britain’s new prime minister. But shortly after assuming office last Wednesday, Brown found himself facing a full-blown terror spree: 36 tension-filled hours that saw two car bombs discovered in London and found grim punctuation this weekend when a Jeep Cherokee, manned by Islamic terrorists, crashed in a fiery blaze into the main terminal of Scotland’s Glasgow Airport.
No one familiar with the events of recent years will surprised to learn that the suspects are all Muslims. Media accounts of the Glasgow attack described the men as “Asian,” a common shorthand for Britons of Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi origin, and witness accounts left little doubt about the attackers’ faith tradition: Those on-scene in Glasgow recalled that one of the attackers, even as he was engulfed in flames, bellowed “Allah, Allah” while resisting police. And while reports that one of the attackers had donned a Hamas-style suicide belt await further corroboration, British counter-terror forces have no illusions about whom they’re dealing with. Lord John Stevens, a former police chief who has been tapped as a terrorism adviser to Brown, made that abundantly clear when he noted that “[t]his weekend's bomb attacks signal a major escalation in the war being waged on us by Islamic terrorists.”
That prompts the question: Why now? By way of explanation, some news reports in the wake of the Glasgow attack cited a posting last week on an Islamist chat room. Signed by one Osama al-Hazeen, reputedly a repeat visitor to the site, it threatened attacks in retaliation for the war in Iraq and the knighting of author Salman Rushdie, “who insulted and slandered Islam.” The first theory in particular appeals to those, on the antiwar Left and isolationist Right, who see the U.S.-led military intervention in Iraq as the wellspring of jihadist wrath. The obvious flaw in that argument is that Scotland is headed by a nationalist government whose first minister, Alex Salmond of the Scottish National Party, has been the leading opponent of the war in Iraq, even supporting efforts to impeach Tony Blair over the invasion. The Glasgow attack thus demonstrates yet again that opposition to U.S.-foreign policy is no protection against Islamic terror, while exposing the hollowness of jihadists’ grievances and the opportunism of their apologists in the West.
Far more credible is the explanation suggested by Nile Gardiner, a fellow in Anglo-American security policy at the Heritage Foundation. “The timing of the attack is significant because al-Qaeda associates attacks with historical developments and we are just days away from the anniversary of the 7-7 bombings,” Gardiner told FrontPage yesterday. The recent attacks, he said, are also meant to test the resolve of the new British government. “Al-Qaeda thinks that, compared to Blair, [Gordon] Brown is the weaker link, and the attack in Glasgow is part of their strategy to split Britain off from the United States in the war on terror.” Gardiner speculated that Brown is unlikely to cave in to demands to withdraw forces from Iraq, though he noted that “many on the Left will be clamoring” for precisely that.
Brown’s task now is to show that he can be trusted to handle the terror threat. His early moves have been encouraging. Beyond unequivocally condemning terrorism as “an act of evil in all circumstances,” and sparing his countrymen familiar platitudes about the “religion of peace,” the Scottish prime minister has sought to give police broad powers to conduct investigations. Brown also revealed his plans to push forward a slate of counterterrorism measures, among them a provision to allow prosecutors to use evidence collected by phone and email taps in terrorism trials and another that would enable police to detain terror suspects for upward of 90 days without charge. (On the latter measure, Brown finds strong opposition from the Tories, a fact that goes a long way toward explaining the electoral weakness of Britain’s leading conservative party.) To those who wondered whether Blair’s successor would have his clarity about the terrorism threat, it was a welcome sign that Britain is not about to unfurl the white flag.
Authorities, to be sure, have also benefited from the ineptitude of the terrorists. For example, the London car bombs were evidently so crudely made that it would have taken nothing short of divine intervention for their lethal contents -- including gas, gasoline and nails -- to explode as intended. Similarly, security officials have said that one of the suspects in the planned London attacks allowed a “crystal clear” picture of him to be snapped by the city’s security cameras. Meanwhile, the driver of the Jeep in Glasgow plowed straight into the airport security posts, which prevented him from driving into the busy terminal. One shudders to imagine the carnage that would have ensued had the would-be terrorists been competent as well as crazed.
It seems almost unnecessary to point out that the latest attacks show that the Islamists’ war is global in scope and that it is driven more by religious fanaticism than a rational response to the policies of the West. But of course that elementary point needs restating when it eludes Democratic presidential candidates like John Edwards, who has declared that the “global war on terror” is a fiction, conjured up by the Bush administration needlessly to frighten Americans. That line may gladden the hearts of Democratic primary voters, but in a world where even Scottish civilians have to fear for their lives, Edwards’s see-no-terror approach is the closest that contemporary politics comes to fantasy.

In this clip you will witness how cows or buffalos are coming together and put aside their differences and fears, and all of the charged at their enemy which in this case was lion and gave a good spanking to the lions and saved the baby.
Applying above clip to our Iran, today Iranian people are picking fight with each other over dead people's past politics like Shah vs Mussadiq. And today Shah vs Mussadiq does not have business, of course there is need for new sort of conflict among Iranian people in order to prolong the longivaty of the theology state in Iran to. There is a talk about how certian ethnic groups are deprived from basic and fundemental freedoms as if the rest of Iranians are enjoying some kind of freedoms and people in anothe part of Iran is eating grapse and honey in the morning and in the evenining they are eating shish kabob.
Let's learn from the above clip and put our mind in one place and our enemy is the Mullahs in Iran which is plundering and murdering Iranian people. If the cows could figure out, how come we cannot figure it? it is a shame.

The Anatomy of Iranian Racism: Reflections on the Root Causes of South Azerbaijan’s Resistance Movement

http://www.bakutoday.net/view.php?d=21507
by Dr Alireza Asgharzadeh
In recent days many Azeri towns and cities in Iran have, once again, become the revolutionary scene of anti-racist and anti-colonial struggle against Iran’s racist and colonial order. The current movement of South Azerbaijan must be situated right at the heart of issues of racial/ethnic oppression and internal colonialism in an Iranian context. By avoiding any mention of the terms ‘racism’ and ‘internal colonialism,’ the dominant Persian discourse has provided a completely upside-down picture of social and ethnic inequality in the country, masterfully managing to deceive the international media and progressive anti-racist forces throughout the world. The fact of the matter is that without taking note of ‘racism’ and ‘colonialism’ as important social facts that do exist in Iranian society, it would be impossible to provide a comprehensive analysis regarding the current Azeri movement, along with other similar movements in Kurdistan, Khuzistan, Baluchistan, Turkman-Sahra, and other regions of the country. Ethnic pluralism, difference and diversity have always been a defining characteristic of what is today called ‘Iran.’ Peoples of various ethnic origins, such as the ancestors of contemporary Azeri-Turks, Kurds, Baluchs, Turkomans, Arabs, Lurs, Gilaks, Mazandaranis and others have lived in Iran for centuries. The history of civilization in what is known today as Iran goes back over six-thousand years. The available archaeological/linguistic record indicates that from the very beginning the region was characterized with extreme ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity. No single ethnic group has ever constituted a definite numerical majority in the country, although the Azeri-Turks now have a relatively slight majority with a population of over 30 million. Up until 1925, the country had been run in accordance with what one may call a traditional confederative system within which all ethnic groups enjoyed the freedom to use and develop their languages, customs, cultures, and identities. With the beginning of the Pahlavi regime in 1925, the natural trend of ethnic and linguistic plurality was abruptly stopped, and a process of monoculturalism and monolingualism started, which continues to date. The aim of this chauvinistic process has been to present the language, history, culture, and identity of the Persian minority as the only authentic language, history, culture, and identity of all Iranians. For over 80 years, the role of the central government in Iran has been one of denying and dismissing ethnic and linguistic diversity in the country. Just as the Pahlavi regime focused on annihilation of cultural, linguistic, and ethnic differences in the country, so too the current Islamic Republic has continued with the politics of assimilation, exclusion, and racism. Under the current establishment, gender-based and religion-based oppressions have also been added to a host of exclusionary and racist practices left over from the previous regime. The racist politics of the governing apparatuses have always been accompanied by ideological and discursive support of the majority of Persian writers, intellectuals and thinkers who, due to their belonging to the dominant group, have enjoyed the privileges of monolingualism, monoculturalism, and racism in the country. To this group must be added the assimilated segment of non-Persian writers and intellectuals whose passionate support for Persian racism has even surprised the Persians themselves. In fact, such individuals of Turkic origin as Mahmood Afshar, Iraj Afshar, Ahmad Kasravi and others have been among the founding fathers of this ugly racist system. The governing apparatuses, the dominant elite, and the farstoxicated intelligentsia have come together and sustained the structural bases of one of the most racist systems in the contemporary world. This naked racism which feeds on outdated and discredited Arayanist paradigms and racist theories of the 18-20th centuries Europe has outlived the Jim Crow segregationist system in America; it has survived Nazism, European fascism, and the Apartheid regime in South Africa. In effect, compared to its kind in Germany, Europe, the US, and South Africa, the Persian racism in Iran represents an amazing success story in terms of its durability, normalcy, and assimilatory capacity. Below are some salient characteristics of this dominant racist discourse and praxis: 1. The Belief in the Superiority of ‘Aryan’ Race Persian racism in Iran advocates a racist and racialized view of the world where the so-called ‘Aryan’ race is seen as a superior race. Using the racist ideas of 18-20th centuries Europe as its theoretical/ideological bases, the dominant group exploits the country’s resources to promote lavishly funded research and exploration regarding the history and existence of this ‘superior Aryan race’ in Iran. On the other hand, serious works challenging the supremacy of Aryanist historiography not only do not receive any assistance but are not even allowed publication in Iran. A glaring case in point is the historian Naser Poorpirar whose recent work on the history of Sasanid dynasty was not permitted to be published in Iran. According to his personal website (http://naria.persianblog.com/), the author self-published the book in Singapore and shipped it back to Iran for distribution. Ordinarily one would expect that a study critically examining the Orientalist construction of pre-Islamic history of Iran would not encounter any kind of government censorship in the Islamic Republic. Not so. Works like Poorpirar’s are not allowed publication simply because they interrogate the Aryan/Fars-centric history of Iran, powerfully exposing its fictional, disingenuous, and dishonest character. 2. The Belief that Iran Is the Land of Aryans Persian racism openly defines Iran as the land of these so-called Aryans who are in turn identified with the dominant Persian group, its language, culture, and identity. Through this racist process, Farsi becomes the only national/official language and the Persian culture gets identified as the national culture of all Iranians; just as Iran’s history gets appropriated to the advantage of this so-called ‘Aryan’ race by excluding, distorting, and erasing the histories, stories, and narratives of other ethnic groups. This exclusion takes place in government-sponsored research projects, schoolbooks, university texts, curriculum, allocation of research funding, etc. In short, under the racist order in Iran, to be Iranian becomes equated with being Persian. This kind of racist identification serves to foreignize and otherize those communities who are not Persian and who do not speak Farsi as their natural mother tongue. 3. The Belief in the Purification of Aryan Race of Iran through Language Drawing on discredited European racist views, the dominant discourse in Iran equates language with race and tries to fabricate Indo-European language ties for non-Farsi speaking peoples such as the Azeri-Turks in an attempt to show that over a thousand years ago they spoke an Indo-European language and are therefore Aryan. As such, they should cleanse themselves of their inferior linguistic/ethnic/cultural identity and become one with ‘the superior Aryan race’ by speaking the language of this race: Farsi. This kind of racist reconstruction of prehistoric (imaginary) languages essentializes race-based and language-based identities and prioritizes them based on a fabricated history of origins, arrivals, etc., giving rise to the absurd idea about who has come earlier than whom, who has come first, who has come second, who has come last, whose language was spoken earlier than the others; and who, as a result, should have mastery over others. These kinds of non-sensical absurdities serve to create unnecessary competitions among various ethnic/national groups which lead to animosity, mistrust and lack of cooperation among them, while leaving them vulnerable to be colonized and assimilated by the dominant racist order. The Iranian racist order openly proscribes non-Farsi languages in the country, banning them from becoming languages of education, instruction, learning, correspondence, and governance. By banning non-Farsi languages, the dominant group violates minoritized communities’ identities; subjugates their minds, and brutalizes their spirits. It supplants the indigenous names of geographical landmarks, cities, towns, villages, and streets; appropriates ancient heroes, historical figures, literary figures, scientists, movie stars, popular singers, dancers, and artists belonging to the marginalized communities. It prevents non-Farsi speaking communities from naming their children as they wish, using their own indigenous languages, cultures, names, words, signs, and symbols, forcing them instead to use names and symbols approved by the dominant discourse and praxis. 4. The Practice of Anachronism in Interpreting Works of History, Religion, and Literature Using an anachronistic method of analysis, the hegemonic discourse in Iran offers purely racist and racialized interpretations of history, historical events, and classical texts such as the Avesta and the Shahnameh of Ferdowsi. It interprets these ancient texts in accordance with modern racist theories and notions which were not in existence at the time these texts were written. The anachronistic reading of these texts becomes central to the maintenance of racist order in Iran in that such a reading legitimates the ownership of the country by a single race, just as it privileges a single language, history, culture, and identity. Anachronism gives a historical justification for contemporary oppressions, exclusions, and annihilations in Iran. 5. The Belief in Essentialism and an Essentialist notion of Iranian-ness The dominant order in Iran promotes an essentialist notion of identity based on race and language. Instead of viewing identities as shifting, non-fixed and fluid categories, the Iranian racist order assigns fixed identities to individuals and communities based on their degree of ‘Iranian-ness’ (Iraniyyat). Under this essentialist and essentializing mentality, those speaking an Indo-European language are considered to be in possession of authentic Iranic identity and hence ‘more Iranian’ than those speaking a Semite or Turkic language. The dominant order plays the race card to create hostilities among marginalized communities, seeking to prevent the formation of any semblance of solidarity among them. By identifying some of them as ‘true Iranians,’ ‘real Aryans,’ and ‘the authentic owners of Iran,’ it engenders a policy of divide and conquer, while sowing the seeds of mistrust and animosity among different ethnic groups. At the same time, it prevents a sensible census from taking place based on ethnicity and language, fearing that an ethnic-based and language-based census would reveal the true size and number of both Persian and non-Persian communities in the country. Just as such racist notions as ‘the true owners of Iran,’ ‘the real Aryans,’ and similar mumbo-jumbo are emphasized to an inflated and inflammatory degree; so too the real issues and concerns such as the need for ‘conducting of an ethnicity/language based national census,’ ‘opening of ethnic studies departments in the universities,’ and ‘researching ethnic groups and ethnic relations in the country’ are de-emphasized, degraded, and dismissed. 6. The Belief in the Systematic Practice of Racism The Iranian racist order uses the coercive force of governing organs to marginalize, criminalize, and punish the activists advocating the cause of minoritized communities, labeling them as traitors, secessionists, agents of foreign governments, etc. During the cold war period, it was customary to label anti-racist activists as communists and KGB agents. Nowadays such activists are labeled as agents of CIA, Israel, Zionism, Turkey, and even the Republic of Azerbaijan. Through such practices, the dominant order refuses the legitimate demands of minoritized communities for equal treatment, justice, and fairness. It brutally suppresses any ethnic-based and language-based activity, forcefully denying and condemning the right for self-determination of various nationalities. On the economic front, the government channels the country’s resources to building infrastructure, factories, and development projects in Persian populated cities such as Isfahan, Shirza, Yazd, and Kerman, while the non-Persian regions of Kurdistan, Baluchistan, Azerbaijan, and other areas more and more plunge in poverty and deprivation. Resistance to the Racist Order Thus, it is in this anti-racist, anti-colonial context that the current South Azerbaijani movement and the movement of other minoritized communities must be approached. It is under a racist and colonial condition that sites such as history, historiography, language, literature, and the education system have become main arenas where the battle for domination and subjugation of the marginalized Other is waged. The dominant group uses these privileged sites to maintain its oppressive power base; to legitimate its dominance and privileged status, and to justify its oppression. Simultaneously, the marginalized uses these very sites to question, challenge, combat, and eventually subvert the oppressive dominant order. For instance, in the linguistic battleground, the dominant bans the minoritized languages and uses its language to supplant them. The marginalized, on the other hand, seeks to reclaim and revitalize her/his excluded indigenous language so that s/he is empowered to self-express, self-identify, and self-determine. Just as the dominant uses history to deny a historical legitimacy to the marginalized Other, so too the marginalized uses her/his own version of history to reject and repudiate the history which is constructed for her/him by the dominant. The dominant uses the education system to enforce its assimilatory and racist policies. The marginalized redefines the purpose of education and schooling to bring about inclusivity, equity, equality and fairness for all. While the marginalized uses all in its power to fight racism and oppression, it is important to realize that her/his battle is an uphill struggle in which s/he has very little access to strategic sites such as history, literature, language, and the education system. These are the sites that have detrimental impacts on the outcome of the battle between the colonizer and the colonized. And these sites are controlled for the most part by the dominant. If the dominant is left to its devices, there is little chance that the marginalized will eventually eliminate the bases of colonialism, oppression, and racism. As such, it is imperative that progressive forces everywhere take note of these anti-colonial, antiracist struggles and support them in any way they can.
